Where We Work


SAFIRE’s head office is situated in Harare. This is where the directorate sits and makes strategic decisions that guide the day to day operations. It is also here where the Programmes Unit, Research and development, Information and networks and the Administration team sits.

SAFIRE works with more than 20,000 households in poor and marginalised communities in marginalised communities in Zimbabwe. We work with rural communities in 12 districts of Zimbabwe. SAFIRE’s areas of operation are divided into regions- Eastern Region and South Eastern Region. Working through district officers and field facilitators, these teams are responsible for overseeing the day to day implementation of SAFIRE’s programmes on the ground ensuring that communities participate and impact is yielded.

South Eastern Region

Based in Bulawayo the South Eastern Region covers projects in Matabeleland North and South as well as Masvingo provinces as follows:

Forest Forces project

-The goal of this project is to improve food security of vulnerable rural communities through participatory sustainable forest management in

  • 4 wards in Hwange district i.e wards 12, 13, 14 and 20
  • 3 wards in Lupane district i.e wards 9, 17 and 18
  • 4 wards in Matobo district i.e wards 4,5,12 and 16

 

Enhancing Nutrition, Stepping Up Resilience and Enterprise (ENSURE)

-This project’s main aim is community disaster management in

  • Wards 5, 6, 7, 8 and 14 in Bikita district
  • Wards 13,14,24,25 and 26 in Chivi district
  • Wards 14, 20, 24 and 25 in Zaka district

 

Integrated Soil-Water Conservation and Livestock Management in the Runde River Catchment Area.

-The overall objective of this project is environmental protection and monitoring to improve the livelihoods of the population in Runde River catchment and the Lowveld cane growing areas in 97 wards of Mwenezi, Chivi, Masvingo, Zaka and Bikita districts

 

Adapting to climate change through protecting and enriching local natural woodlands and forests in Malipati, Chiredzi District.

-This project aims to improve agricultural production through the use of conservation farming techniques in ward 13 and 15 in Chiredzi district targeting 3000 Households.

 

Platform for Agrobiodiversity Research (PAR) Project

This is a partnership between SAFIRE and GEF for SAFIRE to conduct research on land sharing and land sparing in Zimbabwe. The study site is in a dry area in Lupane.

 

 Eastern Region

The Eastern region is based in Mutare and covers projects in Manicaland Province as follows:

 Enhancing Nutrition, Stepping Up Resilience and Enterprise (ENSURE)

-In Manicaland, this project is in

  • Buhera district, wards 11, 17,19, 25, 26, 27, 29
  • Chimanimani district, wards 2,3,4,5,6,8,9,19, 20
  • Chipinge district, wards 1,3,4,16,20,22,24,2526,27,28,29,30

Forest Forces project

-The goal of this project is to improve food security of vulnerable rural communities through participatory sustainable forest management in Chimanimani district wards 5, 8 and 20

 

Scaling up Adaptation in Zimbabwe with a Focus on Rural Livelihoods.

-The overall objective of this project is to scale up adaptation measures and reduce the vulnerability of rural communities, particularly women small-holder farmers to impacts of climate change and extreme events. The project targets 10,100 rural households (70% female headed) in the Natural Region 5 parts of Buhera, Chimanimani and Chiredzi Districts (with SAFIRE covering Buhera and Chimanimani districts only) over the period November 2014 to October 2018.
